Curriculum and Instruction Quarterly Meetings January, 2014 Alabama State Department of Education

Words from Dr. Bice One of the things you told us was that you liked hearing from Dr. Bice – so he will be doing quarterly video updates for us to use in these meetings as well as our informational meetings with superintendents and district staff. Play from DVD.

Plan 2020-Our Vision Every Child a Graduate – Every Graduate Prepared for College/Work/Adulthood in the 21st Century This is why we are here.

2013 Alabama Cohort Graduation Rate 2011 2012 2013   72% 75% 80% 3% 78% 4% 82% 3% 90% 3% 3% 7% 8% 6% 4% 6% 5% 3% 7% 6% 3% 1% 1% 0%

Plan 2020 Strategies Develop and implement a unified PreK through college and career readiness plan Develop and adopt college and career ready standards in all subject areas Create and implement a balanced and meaningful assessment and accountability system Align available programmatic and fiscal resources to support local school needs in the area of instruction

Absolutes During the Transition   Teach to the standards for each of the required subjects (Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards - Courses of Study) Through a clearly articulated and locally aligned K-12 curriculum (Sample curricula found on ALEX and Alabama Insight) Supported by aligned resources, support, and professional development (Sample lesson plans and supporting resources found on ALEX, differentiated support through ALSDE Regional Support Teams and ALSDE Initiatives, etc.) Monitored regularly through formative, interim/benchmark assessments to inform the effectiveness of the instruction and continued learning needs of individuals and groups of students (GlobalScholar, QualityCore Benchmarks, and other locally determined assessments) With a goal that each student graduates from high school with the knowledge and skills to succeed in post-high school education and the workforce without the need for remediation as evidenced by multiple measures achieved through multiple pathways to meet the graduation requirements set for students in Alabama. (Alabama High School Graduation Requirements/Diploma) In the midst of change, there really are some absolutes! Dr. Bice and all of us are committed to listening to you – so we know it is frustrating when things seem to change from one meeting to the other. We are working on that – but remember that we truly have a year to figure this out and put the right things in place for the right reasons. This can only be done with input from you. So,

College and Career Ready Indicators Career Credential Approved transcripted college or post-secondary credit while in high school ACT, AP, IB, or WorkKeys Do your schedules and guidance program promote every student earning at least one College and Career Ready Indicator?

Assessment Data iNOW will be the source data for demographic and enrollment information. No appeals Incorrect assessment labels are an indication that demographic information in iNOW needs updating. Complete all updating by April 15, 2014. STI Data Import Project

ASSIST ASSIST will be the platform for accreditation, regional planning, compliance monitoring, A-CIP, 30-60-90 day plans, etc. All continuous improvement plans will be required to be completed in ASSIST for 2014. ASSIST has the tools for continuous planning. A district or a principal can reopen a plan at any time and update.

CTE Update Career Preparedness Course Credentials/Career Readiness Indicators www.alsde.edu > Click on Offices > Click on Career and Technical Education > Click on Documents > Click on Career Readiness Indicators Career Preparedness (The main idea here is that additional resources, in the form of a handbook or resource guide, will be provided to assist teachers in identifying more specific strategies and resources to assist them in developing lesson plans.) · Math Equivalency Courses (The process is in place to develop math equivalency courses for Algebra II and Algebraic Connections. I think both courses are being addressed.) · Credentialing (In the process of developing procedures for Career Readiness Indicators to be defined so that only approved Career Readiness Indicators (credential) will be listed on a student’s transcript.)
