AACB Work session : Development of an inter-regional payment system integration framework Cairo – April 2019

Current landscape Payment flows from the region as well payment routes used Currencies used on the continent Currencies used in specific regions on the continent Foreign correspondent landscape

Framework for Improvement and Integration of Payment Systems in Africa Legal reforms for the modernization and integration of African payment systems; Identification of technical prerequisites for the modernization and integration of African payment systems; Identification of components of a multilateral clearing and settlement mechanism for effective African payment systems; and Institutional framework for the development and interconnection of African payment systems.

This initiative could be actioned as follows; Undertake relevant research and feasibility study as deemed appropriate; Document the regional settlement systems/platforms that have been implemented on the continent indicating their major business models and features; Determine feasible ways of facilitating current payment flows across countries within the continent belonging to different regional formations; and Outline a framework that may be adopted to facilitate current inter regional payment flows within the continent as well as in the long term.
