European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management Project Vision Our research will improve the management of flood risks within the EU and more broadly. FLOODsite will benefit the citizens of Europe, by reducing flood risks and improving resilience in the face of floods. The partners will work together to implement the research results in practice. The team will produce peer-reviewed scientific publications from their research 21 Jan 205 European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management

European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management FLOODsite Objectives Examine causes, impact and control of floods Why floods occur and how far they travel Frequency and sources of floods, flood routes and defences Human Factors Hazard, exposure, vulnerability, attitudes, damage experienced Risk Management Pre-event planning Emergency management Post-event recovery 21 Jan 205 European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management

European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management Methodology Local extremes and combination of events Performance of defences and spread of inundation Impacts on people Flash flood forecasting for “small” rivers Decision support for flood management Decision support for long term planning Pilot sites for development of methods 21 Jan 205 European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management

European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management 13 Countries Involved Real Cases 21 Jan 205 European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management

European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management Expected Outcomes Better use of weather radar and satellite observations Improved reliability of defences Improved emergency management Systematic mitigation of flood flood risk and sustainable adaptation to change Guidance documents from research Education and training materials 21 Jan 205 European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management

European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management Conclusions Europe is leading the world with FLOODsite FLOODsite will improve the management of all types of flooding However ... Floods are natural and random We cannot eliminate floods but we can prepare for them For further information visit www.floodsite.net 21 Jan 205 European Action Plan on Flood Risk Management
