World War II in the Pacific The Road to Pearl Harbor

Japan After WWI Already ruled Korea and Taiwan; wanted to expand into China Was bitter toward U.S. & Europe: League of Nations refused racial equality U.S. banned Japanese immigration U.S. did not support Japanese imperialism

Post-War Problems Too many people; not enough land or resources People looked to strong military leaders to improve the economy & government Government leaders were unable to restrain the military

Japanese Ambitions Wanted to become a strong world power Looked to the rest of Asia to supply resources; wanted to be the “leader” of all Asian people After invading China, the U.S. “punished” Japan by banning trade of oil & scrap metal

Trouble Brewing… Japan left the League of Nations Made an alliance with Germany and Italy Continued to build up army & navy Secretly planned an attack on the U.S. Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

The Attack on Pearl Harbor Goal: disable U.S. navy so the U.S. would be unable to fight Japan December 7, 1941  350 Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor Americans losses: 2,400+ deaths 1,200+ injured 21 ships damaged/destroyed 180+ planes damaged/destroyed
