Self-service data collection for the most vulnerable – Their Journey By: Salla Mankinen Regional Technology Specialist salla@goodreturn.org https://goodreturn.org.au/

Consumer Awareness and Financial Education 20 week village training targeting the most vulnerable

Our Challenge Would it be possible to have app based self service data collection for the most vulnerable and in the most remote locations? Could there be a Journey from technology illiteracy to technology confidence?

Our Idea Click on your own picture to check in Tablet + technology illiterate friendly app + headphones Click on your own picture to check in

Why did you miss last training session?

Do you have money left this week? Yes, I have money left No, I spent more than I took in

My Technology Journey – the infamous green button At the start of the training 77% of people felt unconfident with the app technology What is a button? What is clicking?

Along the Journey… A little help from a friend… A few weeks pass

End of the Journey – Confidence! I can do it! I’m part of the 21st century 72% felt confident with the app 83% felt a lot more confident with technology in general! “It’s easy, much faster than writing things down on paper” -Neang, CAFE Learner, Kampong Chnang, Cambodia

The answer to our challenge is: Yes, it is possible to use technology for self-reporting with vulnerable target groups and remote locations!

Food for thought It can be cheaper It’s instant, it can directly feed into dashboards It’s a direct communication channel to these target groups It can be more reliable It creates technology empowerment that can have a wider impact For the geeks: you can get access to underlying technical data such as speed of completing an activity or engagement level in the application’s messages. This data gives us valuable insights on the technology confidence level, behavioural change and reliability of the data gathered.
