EAT OR… BE EATEN!

From the day we arrive on the planet And blinking, step into the sun There's more to see than can ever be seen More to do than can ever be done There's far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found But the sun rolling high Through the sapphire sky Keeps great and small on the endless round It's the circle of life And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love Till we find our place On the path unwinding In the circle The circle of life

As defined by Collins Dictionary Nature's way of taking and giving back life to earth. It symbolizes the universe being sacred and divine. It represents the infinite nature of energy, meaning if something dies it gives new life to another. The Circle of Life As defined by Collins Dictionary

FLIP YOUR DOTS! LEARNING GOALS SWBAT construct a food chain to determine and explain the source of energy in a food chain. SWBAT distinguish between and sort producers and consumers within a food chain.

EAT OR BE EATEN! RULES: Work as a team. Select a card from your deck. CHALLENGES: Make a food chain at least 5 links long. Make the longest food chain in the class. RULES: Work as a team. Select a card from your deck. Carefully read clue cards and build a food chain based on information you gather from the cards! Without reusing cards, continue to build as many food chains as you can. TEAM JOBS: A – Time Keeper – Your team has 10 minutes! B – Rule Follower – Be sure your team follows all rules and stays on task. C – Writer – Circle food chain connections. D – Card Boss – Keep track of cards for team.

Which team has the longest chain? Each team needs to construct this food chain on their table.

WHAT’S THE ENERGY SOURCE? What type of living thing does this food chain start with? A PLANT How do plants get their food? THEY MAKE IT! What do we call living things that make their own food? PRODUCERS!

WHAT’S THE ENERGY SOURCE? What type of living thing does this food chain end with? AN ANIMAL How do animals get their food? THEY HUNT OR SCAVENGE What do we call living things that hunt or scavenge for food? CONSUMERS

WHAT’S THE ENERGY SOURCE? TYPES OF CONSUMERS Consumers of plants. HERBIVORE (prefix “herb” means plant) Consumers of plants and animals. OMNIVORE (prefix “omni” means all) Consumers of animals. CARNIVORE (prefix “carni” means flesh)

WHAT’S THE ENERGY SOURCE? Using the food chain on your table, use a dry erase marker and code each card as the following: P = Producer CH = Consumer Herbivore CO = Consumer Omnivore CC = Consumer Carnivore

FLIP YOUR DOTS! LEARNING GOALS SWBAT construct a food chain to determine and explain the source of energy in a food chain. SWBAT distinguish between and sort producers and consumers within a food chain.

WHAT’S THE ENERGY SOURCE? What starts all food chains? PRODUCERS Where do producers get their energy? THE SUN Therefore, where do all living things in a food chain get their energy from?

FLIP YOUR DOTS! LEARNING GOALS SWBAT construct a food chain to determine and explain the source of energy in a food chain. SWBAT distinguish between and sort producers and consumers within a food chain.
