Imperialism CHINA

Qing Dynasty Pronounced Ching The Qing dynasty, was the last imperial dynasty of China. It was established in 1636, and ruled China proper from 1644 to 1912. It begins to weaken with the constant contact and pressure of Western influences. The Qing had restricted European merchants to a small trading outlet but this was disliked by the British

Opium War Britain had a trade deficit, or an unfavorable trade balance, with China. Britain imported more from China than it exported. British started shipping Opium from Northern India into China creating an epidemic. The Chinese asked the British to stop but they refused starting the Opium War

Resolution to the Opium War Chinese were no match for the British war ships Chinese surrender and allowed the British to trade with limited taxes on British goods. Chinese also gave them Hong Kong. The Chinese tried to limit British power by giving the same trading power to others including the United States extraterritoriality living in a section of a country set aside for foreigners but not subject to the host country’s laws

Open Door Policy In 1899, U.S. secretary of state John Hay wrote a note to Britain, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. Hay presented a proposal that ensured equal access to the Chinese market for all nations and preserved the unity of the Chinese empire. US wanted to end the different influences in China giving the US access to trade like the others.

Boxer Rebellion The Boxers were upset by economic distress and the foreign takeover of Chinese lands. They wanted foreigners out. They especially disliked Christian missionaries and Chinese converts to Christianity who seemed to threaten Chinese traditions. Boxer bands roamed the countryside and slaughtered foreign missionaries and Chinese Christians. An allied army consisting of 20,000 British, French, German, Russian, American, and Japanese troops attacked Beijing and restored order.
