Monday, March 25th HW: Have a good night. Aim: How did conflicting ideologies lead to the Cold War? Do Now: Complete the chart.

ILLUSTRATED DAILY NEWSPAPER Est. 1842 Tuesday, March 6, 1946 Price .50 Churchill sounds an alarm! “Aniironicurtain hasidescended acrossithe continent.” AccordingntonChurchill, “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent.” Churchill used the term to describe the symbolic divide between western European democracies and eastern European communist states. A clever metaphor as the Soviets concealed their intentions from their former allies. Churchill had stated “Nobody knows what Soviet Russia and its Communist international organization intends to do…” Churchillncalls fornimmediate action! The former Prime Minister extolled the United States of America. Like the great Frenchman, Jean Jacques Rosseau, Churchill argued that “primacy in power is also joined an awe-inspiring accountability to the future.” In the interest of world peace, the United States could not isolate itself like it had after the First World War. Churchill called for “fraternal association” between the British Empire and the United States of America. Is another war on the horizon? Churchill seemed convinced if left unchecked Soviet aggressive tendencies would result in yet another war. Citizens throughout the world are being repressed as they do not have free elections, freedom of expression, or fair judicial processes. Countries such as Albania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and East Germany are suffering under Soviet control. What was the purpose of Churchill’s speech? “What they [Soviets] desire is the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines.” Churchill wanted the audience to perceive the Soviets as greedy and domineering.

What was the purpose of Churchill’s speech? “If all British moral and material forces and convictions are joined with your own [American] in fraternal association, the high-roads of the future will be clear, not only for us but for all, not only for our time, but for a century to come.” Churchill wanted the audience to feel confident that if the British and Americans cooperated peace would abound.
