DENSITY. Density is the measure of mass per unit volume of substance. So, density is a measure of the amount of matter (particles) in a given volume (space)

E XIT TICKET Why do different amounts of the same liquid have the same density?

W HY DO DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF THE SAME LIQUID HAVE THE SAME DENSITY ? The amount you have doesnt change how close together the particles in the matter are to each other The mass and volume are both changing so that it is all the same when you divide Mass and volume change in proportion to each other Its a ratio! Example: 1/2 = 3/6 However, different liquids have their own unique ratio because their particles are naturally closer or farther apart

S OME EXAMPLES : Densities of….. Water = 1 g/ml Alcohol = 0.86 g/ml Vegetable oil = 0.91 g/ml So what should happen if you put all three liquids in the graduated cylinder? Does the order you pour matter?

S O WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN IF YOU PUT ALL THREE LIQUIDS IN THE GRADUATED CYLINDER ? They will form a density gradient. Alcohol 0.86 TOP (surface) Vegetable oil0.91 Water1.0BOTTOM If one liquid is less dense than another, it will form a layer above the more dense liquid. The same is true for gases: a gas that is less dense will rise above one that is more dense.

DEFINITION Density--the amount of matter packed into a given space. Units: g/cm 3 or g/mL

DEFINITIONS Mass--the amount of matter (think stuff or particles) in an object. units: g or kg Volume--the amount of space an object takes up. (3-D) units: mL or cm 3
