Incorporating Counterclaim Improving our persuasive writing

What is a Counterclaim?

A Counter Claim A claim Made to disprove another claim

In English, Please …. An argument that goes against your argument

Counterclaims Coca-cola is the best soda. Harry Potter should be seen by everyone. Drake leads the music industry. Pepsi is better because it is sweeter. Harry Potter corrupts the youth. Drake is only famous because Lil’ Wayne put him on his label. Original Claim Counterclaim

Examples of Sentence Frames How to introduce a counterclaim into your paper. Counterclaim “Some may say that …” “While there are those that believe …” “Others have found …”

Turn to Your Partner Your Claim: The driving age should be 18. Use the “Counterclaim and Rebuttal Brainstorm Worksheet”

Creating Our Counterclaim “Some may say that …” “While there are those that believe …” “Others have found …” Learning independence Traveling to and from work Learning curve applies to ALL new drivers (any age) Sentence Frames Opposing Viewpoints

Now Let’s Talk about Rebuttal Can anyone tell me anything about rebuttals?

Rebuttal An argument meant to overcome an Opposing argument

You’re Wrong Because … Harry Potter corrupts the youth. While some believe that Harry Potter corrupts the youth, the story is actually about a young person overcoming evil with the help of courage and friends, a valuable lesson for youth. Counterclaim Rebuttal

Sentence Frames Counterclaim “Some may say that …” “While there are those that believe …” “Others have found …” Rebuttal “… however …” “… the evidence shows …” “… but I am of the opinion that …”

Due to the fact that the parents of Romeo and Juliet were feuding and would not allow their children to marry, they are to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s suicides. Juliet’s father told her that she must marry Paris and, “Get thee to church a’Thursday/ Or never after look me in the face” (III,VI, Lns. 162-163). By giving Juliet an ultimatum, her father leaves her feeling trapped. These feelings of imprisonment coupled with the impending deadline of her marriage to Paris forced Juliet to enact a risky plan which, ultimately, lead to her death. There are those that believe that the Friar is to be blamed for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths instead of their parents. He provided the potion to Juliet to fake her death without informing Romeo, and he is the one that married the couple even though he know the family history. Others claim that this evidence proves the Friar’s guilt in the suicides. What others have claimed is wrong because, ultimately, if the Montagues and Capulets were not feuding, then Romeo and Juliet would have been able to marry happily. The hatred between Romeo and Juliet’s families was fueled by their parents and lead to their death. School should be year round so students don’t lose knowledge over the summer. Parents should be required to provide for their children until the children can provide for themselves.
