2019 Media Festival Introduction

What is the Media Festival? The Media Festival is held every year here at Carrolltowne as a way to showcase our students’ talent. It is an opportunity for all students to submit photographs that they have taken for everyone to see. Teachers vote on their favorites in 4 subjects, and in 2 categories. The contest is also broken down by grades. Pre K through 2nd and 3rd through 5th.

What are the Subject Areas? Students may submit photographs for any or all of the following: Life Study Landscape Still Life Special Effects

What are the Categories? Color Monochrome – either black and white or sepia

What is Life Study? A life study photograph is a picture taken of people or animals. For Example – a sibling, a bird, a salamander, or a dog. http://jenniferfaithbrownphotography.blogspot.com/2015/06/tips-on-taking-better-photos-of-your.html http://www.photographylife.com/wildlife-photography-tutorial

What is Landscape? A landscape photograph is of an outdoor scene. It can contain natural or manmade items, but not people or animals. For Example – a beach, a mountain scene, or a playground. http://cordinglandscape.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/natural-stone-steps-path-1400x933.jpg https://digital-photography-school.com/27-black-and-white-landscape-images/

What is Still Life? A still life is a photograph of inanimate objects arranged by the photographer in a pleasing manner. For Example – a bowl of fruit, a stack of books, or a vase of flowers. http://www.thephotoargus.com/35-superb-examples-of-still-life-photography/ http://www.designcrowd.com/design/8825460/

What is Special Effects? A special effects photograph can be of any subject area. The photograph needs to be changed, or manipulated, in some way to change the way it looks. This can be done by changing colors, or using special filters on the camera or in your photo processing software. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfCX7O_Nd6Q https://digital-photography-school.com/weekly-photography-challenge-special-effects/

I Want to Participate! Now What? TAKE PICTURES!!! Any photos you’ve taken in the last year may be submitted. You may submit up to 2 photographs in each subject area, but only 1 color and 1 monochrome. That means you can submit up to a total of 8 photographs, or you can submit one or two. You do not have to submit for each subject area, just the ones you want to.

What else? Photographs can be no smaller than 3 ½” x 5”and no larger than 8” x 10.” Photographs MUST be matted. Mat cannot be larger than 12” x 14.” Please do not embellish matting in any way.
