Chapter 6: Choosing Canada as Home By: Anna Kolomiyets & Kateryna Zhurybida
Why did people immigrate to Canada? People in slavery, escape to Canada to live a free life. These People are called refugees- they usually escape wars in their countries. Many people also immigrate to Canada in search of employment.
What year did the most people immigrate? The most people immigrated to Canada in the year 1912 with about 400 000 immigrants. Many of these immigrants came through Pier 21.
Comparing Communities Syria Morocco The majority of Moroccans arrived to Canada from the year 1962 to 1993. Between these two time periods, about 40 000 Moroccans immigrated to Canada. The majority of Syrian refugees arrived to Canada from the year 2011 and are still arriving because of the civil war. Between these two time periods, 102 808 Syrian refugees arrived.
Why They Immigrated Syria Morocco Syrians displaced by ongoing fighting are immigrating to Canada. Innocent refugees are escaping civil war and coming to Canada in hopes for a safer life. Moroccans immigrated to Canada because of the lack of well-paying jobs. They wanted to live a fuller and richer life, so they immigrated to Canada to get a job and raise their families in a better place.
Before and After Immigrating Syria Morocco Syrians expected a civil-war- free country and life. Some government-sponsored Syrian refugees staying at a budget hotel in Toronto say they feel like they’re “trapped in a prison” without hope due to a lack of communication, supplies and assistance. Moroccans expected a fuller and richer life. Moroccans were told by immigration officers at Montreal’s Trudeau airport that their family’s visas were given out by mistake and had been revoked by Immigration Canada.
Where Did They Settle? Syria Morocco Syrian refugees settled mainly in Thornton-Ontario, Altona- Manitoba, and Whitehorse- Yukon, but have settled in all provinces around Canada. But because of civil-war in Syria, there are more refugees to arrive to Canada that may create communities in other large cities too. Moroccan immigrants settled mainly in the province of Quebec, but there are also communities in Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa. Because many Moroccans living in Canada are not registered with the Moroccan authorities, the real weight of the Moroccan community in Canada may be underestimated.
Pier 21 Pier 21 served as a passenger terminal for trans-Atlantic Ocean liners from 1928 to 1971 in Halifax – the capital of Nova Scotia, Canada. Pier 21 opened on March 28 1928. Over one million immigrants came to Canada through Pier 21 and it is the last surviving seaport immigration facility in Canada. It is now a museum and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.
