Clothes Line Math July 17, 2017

Objective and agenda Order rational numbers on a number line. Tell me all you can Explain clothes line math

Tell me all you can about… -6.5

Clothesline math Landmark numbers Discuss placement of opposites.

Group practice I will give you groups that you will work with to place your fractions. Pin up your clothesline between two chairs. Each person will get a number to place on the clothesline. Green set then blue set. Decide which landmark numbers you need to place on your number line. Each person will place their numbers on the number line and explain why the number is placed as it is. What is the “big idea” behind how to place these fractions? How could you transfer that idea to another set?

Big ideas What was the big idea behind the green set of cards? How would you place 10/11, 10/102, 10/23 using your rule? What was the big idea behind the blue set of cards? How would you use your rule to place 4/7, 14/27, 51/101?

Exit slip Explain where you would place 7/8 and 7/9 on a number line and why.
