Hitler’s Rise to Power
Hitler as a Child Hitler was born in Austria. Hitler had 4 siblings die during his childhood and only 1 sister survived. He was denied entrance to art school twice. His mother died of breast cancer. He earned medals for bravery in 4 years of war on Germany’s side. Hitler was injured twice in war- once by a grenade splinter and another by a gas attack which made him temporarily blind. He found out that there was an armistice- end of fighting- by Germany and he was furious that Germany surrendered.
A little about Hitler… Hitler was always interested in politics He was a “German Nationalist” German Nationalism: the desire to unite all German speaking people If people in neighboring countries spoke German, what do you think Hitler would want to do to these countries?
Hitler’s Rise to Power Germany was economically devastated after WWI Hitler began to gain a following by passionately lecturing in beer halls in the 1920s Put in jail for treason in 1924 Using propaganda and powerful speeches, the Nazi party began to gain more and more seats in German government Hitler was a proud German who gave hope to a broken country In 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany
How did Hitler get power? Many Nazis were already in government positions through popular elections In 1928, Nazis got 2.8% of the vote In 1930, Nazis got 18.3%, (6,406,397 votes) They became the second largest political party in Germany Hitler, a popular and outspoken leader, was appointed to the position of Chancellor of Germany in 1933
Under the constitution of the “Weimar Republic” in a time of crisis the President of Germany can take over the country and create laws to “protect Germany’s citizens.” Hitler used this law as soon as he came to power to take absolute control of Germany—a dictator!
