WASHIMS Innovation (Strategy/ Planning/ monitoring) Please insert: A picture from your country (your minister, or a WASH programme, or a stakeholder meeting/…) The flag from your country The name/s or the Minister/s presenting The topic of your presentation: it can be one of the 5 building blocks and it can be an example from a specific sub-sector. It should be as much as possible relevant to prepare for the challenges posed by the SDGs ( how do we achieve universal, equitable, safely managed services)? Hon. Suleiman Adamu – Minister of Water Resources High Level Ministerial Meeting , 15 and 16 March 2016 @sanwatforall

The issue we seek/sought to address Universality Equity Sustainability (through improved functionality) Safe management (Quality/availability) {accessibility is being incorporated} Performance benchmarking Evidence based decision making

What we are doing/did to address the issue Nigeria has developed the WASH Information Management System (WASHIMS) that is currently being scaled up across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) enabling performance tracking and evidence based decision making across LGAs. MAP VIEW WEB PORTAL

FUNCTIONALITY IMPROVES WITH IMPROVED ACCOUNTABILITY WASHIMS linked to Realtime Tracking of Water Point Facility using SMS In Bakori LGA, water point functionality increased from 73% to 98% in 3 months time and has remained so for a year Water Point functionality across LGAs. WASHIMS linked to sms based reporting allowing Real-time tracking of Water point functionality.

Outcomes/ lessons learnt/ next steps Visible results creating demand from States for WASHIMS Use of smartphone for baseline data collection has cut down costs by over 75% Plan to have at least two States with all LGAs using WASHIMS in 2016 Costs 5,000 US$ per LGA; 190 $ per month operational cost) One time capital cost for WASHIMS and Real-time tracking is US$ 5,000 per LGA; while operational cost is US$ 190. With more LGAs adopting WASHIMS the monthly cost will reduce.

LGA-wide Approach to accelerate access to WASH The LGA wide approach to WASH has afforded us the opportunity of scaling up good approaches such as ODF, VILOM, WASHIMs, Water safety planning, etc. Since 2010, Nigeria has been implementing the LGA wide approach with UNICEF with promising results in sanitation. Now this model is being used to scale-up Village Level Operation and Maintenance; Water safety Planning and multi-sectoral convergence interventions. With the introduction of LGA-wide approach in 2010, there has been an exponential growth in the attainment of ODF status.
