FOOD! Count & Non-count Nouns Communication Englisㅗ

Food! Yum  What foods are countable and uncountable? What foods do you like? -Lasagna -guacamole crepes tacos kebabs pancakes students put the foods into countable & uncountable categories – I tell them to look for “plural” nouns (i.e. nouns that end with “s”). Countable: tacos, crepes, kebabs, pancakes, cheese burgers, steak, strawberries Uncountable: guacamole, lasagna, spaghetti, cereal, ice cream, curry, chicken & asparagus Cheese burgers Chocolate chip cookies Strawberries -Spaghetti -Indian curry -Ice cream -Grilled chicken & asparagus -cereal

Count and Non-count Nouns “Count” = we can count. Usually we use “a” for one item. When more than 1 item, we use the plural form = (s) I have a dog. / I have two dogs. He has a pen. / He has three pens. I would like a banana. / I would like two bananas. “Non-count” nouns cannot be counted. Liquids, meats and items of “many” are non-count Examples: rice, soda, chicken We count quantity(양) by using “a little”, “some” or “a lot of” DO NOT add “s” to the end of the noun. There is some milk left. We don’t have a lot of rice. I want a little chicken. You cannot have “1” of a non-count item. P. 47-3

Count or Non-count GAP fill: We ate some __________ (sandwich) for lunch. I have a lot of _________ (homework) to do tonight. Peter had _____, _____, and __________ (meat, rice, vegetable) for dinner. I bought ____ shirt at the store. (1 shirt) I learn more new ________ (word) in English class everyday. When he is thirsty, he likes to drink _____ (milk). I need to buy ____ avocado, two _________, and ____ lime at the store.(a / tomato / a) sandwiches homework meat rice vegetables a words milk an tomatoes a

Countable or Uncountable? Countable Nouns Uncountable Nouns Carrot Avocado Lemon Onion Apple Egg Banana mushroom Chocolate Milk Butter Coffee Bread Celery rice Corn P. 47-3 Put the following nouns into the appropriate column HINT: Think about if the noun needs an “s” at the end of the word when using it in plural speech. Chocolate milk carrot avocado Lemon onion butter coffee Bread apple celery rice Egg banana mushroom corn

More Non-Count Information We can “count” non-count nouns by using a countable noun followed by the word “of” Count noun + of + non-count noun A cup of coffee. A slice of bread A glass of wine. A bottle of beer. A bowl of soup. A piece of cake. A stalk of celery. A head of broccoli. Two cups of coffee. Two slices of bread. Two glasses of wine. Two bottles of beer. Two bowls of soup. Two pieces of cake. Two stalks of celery. Two heads of broccoli.

Quizlet

Find Someone Who… FOOD! (p. 71) You must try to find 3 classmates for each statement on the worksheet. FIRST! – Determine how to ask the appropriate question Use: Do you… (ask about opinion (의견), preference or knowledge (지식)) Can you… (ask about ability (능력) or skill (기능)) Have you… (ask about something from the past) Are you… (ask about current situation; describes yourself) Example: Find someone who… doesn’t like chocolate Question: Do you like chocolate? Friday Class finished only 1 student interview

Questions… Helpful Hint! Remember simple present tense questions? Our subject is YOU, so there is no “s” on our main verb when asking questions! Example: Find someone who likes chocolate. Question: Do you like chocolate? Do you like chocolate? Can you make pizza? Do you love chicken? Can you boil an egg? Have you ever tried Indian food? Do you hate spicy food? Have you eaten until you were sick? Are you on a diet? Do you eat fast food every week? Do you drink coffee? Do you love Italian food? Have you ever eaten more than 4 plates of food at a buffet? Do you eat breakfast? Have you ever eaten a whole pizza? Are you a vegetarian? No “s”

Ask your group members… What is the most disgusting (메스 꺼운) thing you have ever eaten? What is a food that you would eat for every meal if you could? What is the most unhealthy food you can think of? P. 49-B
