1. What was the “White Man’s Burden”?
1. The idea that the white race was responsible for taking care of other races because they believed they were superior.
What was the Opium War?
War between China and Great Britain because GB was introducing Opium into China in order to gain influence in the country.
What was the Boxer Rebellion?
The boxers were upset that the foreigners had influence in the country and were trying to scare them out. Ultimately they were put down.
6. How was the Opium War and Boxer Rebellion similar?
Both were fights to drive our foreigners from China
7. What were some of the effects of the Russo-Japanese war?
Established Japan as a major naval power
8. Describe both Japan and China’s reaction to westernization/industrialization.
China- resisted at first Japan- Open to industrialization

They were forced to take jobs at lower prices and children were forced to work and not go to school

Long hours, no benefits, poor pay, poor health conditions

Governments must control markets to improve people’s lives. Government should regulate the economy to end poverty and promote equality.

- What is communism?
A form of complete socialism in which the means of production are owned by the people, ex. Land, mines, factories, RR’s and businesses. Private property would cease to exist. All goods and services would be shared equally. Without it, Marx believed that the govt. would wither away as a classless society developed.
What were Adam Smith’s beliefs?
Free markets – economies unregulated by government Laissez Faire – the economic policy of letting owners of business set working conditions without interference from the government

Rigid class system with SE Asians on bottom Millions of people migrated there from other parts of Asia looking for work. The region became a mix of Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Buddhist culture, resulting in tension that still exists today.

Some countries are still struggling with self governance and there are tensions in some areas of the world because of groups that were forced to occupy the same land.
