Elements of Mythology Infer the elements of Mythology by studying each example. Then, write that element in one of the text bubbles on your web diagram.

What element is described… Disguised as a “gray old woman,” Athena appears to a weaver. A young son travels a great distance to meet his father, the god of the sun. Goddess Demeter teaches man about farming and agriculture. God of the Underworld, Hades, makes a deal with musician Orpheus.

The presence of gods or goddesses What is the element? The presence of gods or goddesses

What element is described… Prometheus is punished for bringing fire to mankind against Zeus’ wishes, showing the importance of obedience. Narcissus is so enchanted by his own beauty, he starves to death staring at his own reflection, suggesting that it is bad to be too proud. Odysseus outsmarts the Cyclops and rescues his men, pointing out that sometimes it is more important to be intelligent than strong.

What is the Element? Values are taught.

What element is described… After the death of Narcissus, the gods change his body into a flower so he is remembered. That lightning? An angry Zeus is throwing lightning bolts. A boastful hunter, Orion, is accidently killed by Artemis. In sorrow, she transforms his body into a constellation. Hera’s hundred-eyed spy, Argus, is killed by Hermes. Hera puts the eye pattern on the peacock to remember him.
