Presentation transcript:

You should start with something related to your topic. Something INTRODUCTION You should start with something related to your topic. Something interesting. Then you move into your thesis. Your thesis is a point blank sentence telling your reader what your paper is about. Often it has three topics or elements to it.

Thesis Examples A thesis should be specific: People are selfish Vs. Human selfishness is seen at its worst during rush hour. A thesis is not an announcement: I want to share some thought with you about our space program. America's space program is a waste of money. A thesis is not a fact: Jane Austin is the author of Pride and Prejudice. The novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin has literary merit through her universal theme of love, pride, and prejudice.

The topic sentence should reflect Body Paragraphs The topic sentence should reflect back to the thesis. Then the statements should be supported with evidence from the literature.

Supporting Evidence Calpurnia and Portia share love and loyalty for their husbands. Both of the women cherish their husbands and want what is best for them. Calpurnia has a bad dream regarding the Romans washing their hands in Caesar’s blood. She asks Caesar to stay home in order to keep him safe. Portia worries about her husband’s odd behavior the last few days and tries to convince him to let her help put his mind at ease. These examples clearly show how both women are concerned for their husbands and desire their best. Their personalities and avenues for getting what they want contrasts like vanilla ice cream and hot blackberry pie.

The Conclusion The conclusion should restate the thesis in a new way. Repetition here is not good. There should be a new thought, concluding question, or call to action – if a persuasive essay. This paragraph should be five sentences, just like the other paragraphs.

Conclusion: Making it Fresh These women, Portia the strong and logical one and Calpurnia the submissive, emotional wife, show the wide array of women in literature. While they both add additional elements to the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, it is Calpurnia who appears to be the high-strung wife, but in reality has solid advice for Caesar, which he rejects. This play should give men a desire to listen to their wives, realizing they might have more wisdom than they first thought.
