Coalition for Urban Harvest Container Gardening Coalition for Urban Harvest

Target Population Families of Delaware County in Indiana. Focus on teaching parents skills so they can bond and teach their children

Background Information Median Household Income = $37,208.00 Poverty Rate = 23% In 2010 the Indiana obesity rate for residents age 18 and older was 29.6%, age 18 and younger 12.8%. Fresh food is essential for a healthy lifestyle.

Intervention Strategies Educate Parents and children about container gardening through instructional workshops. **6 workshops, twice per month for 3 months in the Spring Mention about advertising at schools, location of workshops, etc. Gardening kit given to each family at the workshops. 6 workshops x 50 families at each workshop = 300 families benefit from the program

Goal To enable families to improve their health by growing and eating their own fresh food by gaining a skill that can be passed down to future generations.

Objectives By 12/01/13 the project materials that will be used for the Grow It/Eat It campaign will be completed and all materials needed to provide the education will be available and ready to use. By 01/01/14 all volunteers will be educated and available to implement the Grow It/Eat It program that will begin on 01/04/14. By 04/01/14 all Grow It/Eat It intervention workshops will be completed and final evaluation and presentation will be available for the Brey Foundation.

The total amount that we would use would be $8,796.00. With the grant amount being $10,000, we would have $1,204.00 left over at the end of the program. This money would be returned back to the Brey Foundation. The main expenses of the program would be the gardening tools and supplies, the workshop facility rental, and the seeds for the fruits and vegetables.
