Alysia Bernicki – Case Coordinator Kayla Vick – Residential Supervisor The Lakeland Centre for FASD is a not for profit society that has worked with women who were pregnant or post-delivery and substance using in the community for 19 years through Alberta’s Parent Child Assistant Program (PCAP) THIS IS A PREVENTION PROGRAM TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN BORN WITH FASD AND TO BETTER SUPPORT WOMEN The women in the PCAP found the treatment they were seeking difficult because: It was not long enough to make behaviour changes The programs were often not adapted to meet their health needs The programs were co ed, leaving them feeling unsafe or finding new relationships From these findings came the 2nd floor…..  The 2nd floor began as a project with the Alberta Safe Communities Initiative Project. We opened our doors in 2012. Our current operational funding is provided by a partnership between Alberta Health and Alberta Human Services. Welcome to the 2nd Floor Located in Cold Lake, AB; Operated by a Not-For-Profit organization – Lakeland Centre for FASD; Long term residential wrap-around addictions recovery centre exclusively for women with problematic substance use; For women from Alberta with a fee for- service bed for out- of- province applicants; Cost of tx for residents of Alberta: $40 Discharge based on each woman's individual recovery plan; Ages 15+ Trans+ The 2nd Floor opened to the public in June of 2012 and takes a harm reduction based approach geared towards women experiencing problematic substance abuse. The model for the 2nd Floor was derived from the parent child assistance program. We are located in Cold Lake (3.5 hours NE of Edmonton). Operated by the Lakeland Centre for FASD. We accept women on opioid agonist therapies Any exclusions? We do not accommodate children We cannot accept women who are on anti-psychosis medications and refuse to take them Pregnant women can be accepted until one month prior to their due date

Wanted to use this platform to debunk one of the most common questions we get here at the 2nd Floor. A: You do not have to be pregnant to attend the 2nd Floor, however, priority is given to women who are pregnant.

What to Expect A private room; A facility designed to provide a safe, secure home like environment with 24-hr staffing; Access to a nurse and/or Physician, as needed; Referrals related to personal & prenatal health; Nutritious meals & snacks – in house cook; Individualized treatment & after care plans: transition to community supports & services;

Our Approach Life skills, Trauma Informed and Harm Reduction based programming; The Circle of Courage©, a medicine wheel based approach; 1:1 counselling; access to alternative therapies; access to other supports and services; an individual recovery plan and after care plan that is holistic and relationship based; Once a woman is accepted, we meet with her within the first week to outline what her goals are while in treatment and what her most important needs are. All women meet with our residential nurse to address any physical health needs and they all have a dental hygiene appointment - Most of the women we serve arrive with no ID’s, no stable income, have not completed their taxes. All of this becomes high priority for our team to assist a woman with, while she focuses on her personal healing. Daily programming is focused on: building lifeskills (such as daily hygiene for themselves and their common spaces, learning how to cook nutritious meals as ‘kitchen helper’, how to access services in the community such as using the local bus system or how to budget and grocery shop, etc.) Alternative therapies: yoga, reiki, massage therapy, art therapy Community Involvement: Walking dogs at the local humane society, volunteering at the local thrift shop 1:1 Addictions counselling and group sessions Cultural Connection: Connected with a local female elder who comes to the centre and shares traditional knowledge, daily smudge and the women can attend sweat Above all – we utilize our community, which role models to the women how they can use their home communities in healthy ways as well The 2nd Floor provides a detailed treatment summary that explains all programming she did, strengths, challenges and detailed recommendations for current and future supports. Our team is filled with creative problem solvers who work to seek supports for our clients prior to their discharge. For example: connecting them with PCAP, contacting local services to see what programming would be available to her, case conference with all supports involved – ultimately the goal for us to look at what will change in her environment to support her in her recovery
