Amos 6:1-2

Woes from the Lord

Woe to those who are ease while rebelling against God 1 Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes! 2 Go over to Calneh and see; And from there go to Hamath the great; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory? Amos 6:1-2

Woe to those who are ease while rebelling against God Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. Ecclesiastes 8:11

Woe unto those who are enjoying “the good life”… 3 Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near; 4 Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall; 5 Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David;

Woe unto those who are enjoying “the good life”… 6 Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Amos 6:3-6

Woe unto those who are enjoying “the good life”… Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Amos 6:6

Why the woes?

The ungodly living spelled their doom Therefore they shall now go captive as the first of the captives, And those who recline at banquets shall be removed. Amos 6:7

The ungodly living spelled their doom 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8

The pride of destruction was strong The Lord God has sworn by Himself, The Lord God of hosts says: “I abhor the pride of Jacob, And hate his palaces; Therefore I will deliver up the city And all that is in it.” Amos 6:8

The pride of destruction was strong Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

The pride of destruction was strong 5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

The pride of destruction was strong 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 1 Peter 5:5-9

When the doom comes

The pride of destruction was strong 9 Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10 And when a relative of the dead, with one who will burn the bodies, picks up the bodies to take them out of the house, he will say to one inside the house, “Are there any more with you?” Then someone will say, “None.” And he will say, “Hold your tongue! For we dare not mention the name of the Lord.”

The pride of destruction was strong 11 For behold, the Lord gives a command: He will break the great house into bits, And the little house into pieces. 12 Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into gall, And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, 13 You who rejoice over Lo Debar, Who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves By our own strength?”

The pride of destruction was strong 14 “But, behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” Says the Lord God of hosts; “And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath To the Valley of the Arabah.” Amos 6:9-14

The pride of destruction was strong For behold, the Lord gives a command: He will break the great house into bits, And the little house into pieces. Amos 6:11

The Foolishness of Sin: Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into gall, And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, Amos 6:12

The Foolishness of Sin: But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream. Amos 5:24

The Foolishness of Sin: You who rejoice over Lo Debar, Who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves By our own strength?” Amos 6:13

The Foolishness of Sin: 4 Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),

The Foolishness of Sin: 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live. 1 Corinthians 8:4-6

Lessons for Us Today

Lessons for Us Today Sin is not to be taken lightly. Repentance must not be delayed.

Conclusion God is not at ease with sin and the Christian shouldn’t be either.
