Title of notes: Solar and Lunar eclipse Pg. 27 & 28 RS Goal for lesson: write on your self assessment worksheet I can describe the position of the sun, Earth, and moon during a solar and lunar eclipse.

Eclipse When one celestial object is temporarily covered. Three or more objects aligned.

How often do eclipses occur every year? Solar – Appx. 4 per year Lunar – Appx. 3 per year

A solar eclipse can only happen on a new moon. What is a solar eclipse? These occur when the moon moves in front of the sun as seen from Earth. A solar eclipse can only happen on a new moon.

Partial Solar Eclipse: Occurs when the Moon does not line up with the Sun exactly and it partially obscures the sun.

Annular Solar Eclipse: When the Moon is further from the Earth and/or the Earth is closer to the Sun the Moon will appear smaller in comparison to the Sun so during an eclipse will not entirely cover it appearing as a bright ring surrounding the Moon.

Total Solar Eclipse: Occurs when the Moon completely obscures the Sun allowing the fainter solar corona to be visible.

What is a lunar eclipse? These occur when the moon passes through the shadow of the earth. A lunar eclipse can only happen on a full moon.

3 types of lunar eclipses Total lunar eclipse: Earth’s full shadow falls on the moon Partial lunar eclipse: The Sun, Earth, and Moon are not quite perfectly aligned. Penumbral lunar eclipse: The Earth subtly shades the moon, but most people will not be able to tell a difference in the moon’s appearance.

Why is the Moon Red During a Total Lunar Eclipse? During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks the Sun's light from reaching the Moon. The Moon remains completely within Earth's shadow, indirect sunlight still manages to reach and illuminate it. However, this sunlight must first pass deep through the Earth's atmosphere which filters out most of the blue colored light. The remaining light is a deep red or orange in color. Earth's atmosphere also bends some of this light and a small fraction of it can reach and illuminate the Moon.

Notebook activity pg. 27 LS Draw and label the position of the sun, Earth, and moon at: Solar eclipse Lunar eclipse

When will the U.S. have their next eclipse? The last total solar eclipse visible from the mainland U.S. was on August 21, 2017. The next total solar eclipse will be April 8, 2024. The last lunar eclipse was the Super Blood Wolf Moon on Jan 20-21, 2019. Upcoming lunar eclipse: July 16, 2019 (partial eclipse)
