UAS Evolution, Trends & Best Practices 8, May, 2019 – CLASSROOM XXX PREPARING FOR TOMORROW’S DISASTERS TODAY UAS Evolution, Trends & Best Practices 8, May, 2019 – CLASSROOM XXX

Intro to UAS What is a UAS Unmanned Aerial System Commonly referred to as a Drone Types of UAS Single Rotor (Helicopter) Multi Rotor (eg. DJI Phantom) Fixed Wing (eg. Sensefly eBee)

Hobby Aircraft Hobby aircraft is where many UAS operators start. Hobby aircraft are cheap and easy to build, but the pilot is the “brain” in most cases Requires skill to build and pilot aircraft with little or no assists. The Academy of Model Aeronautics are an excellent resource for hobbyists. They are similar to the AOPA for pilots of full sized aircraft.

Part 107 Getting your Part 107 is a bit intimidating, but grants you the privilege of flying for your organization and gives you access to the waiver system.

Preparing to take your Part 107 exam I personally recommend the UAS Test Prep book by the ASA. It has everything you need to pass the exam if you are self motivated. You could take a course like the one offered by Kris Grahm with Sansman. If you are already a pilot, it is as simple as taking an online rating exam.

UAS SELECTION What role is the UAS going to fill? Mapping Video Still Photos Multispectral?

Practice Exercises Orbits Walk the dog Panning Dolly shots Etc. Lion Tamer Orbit a point of interest Walk the dog Panning Dolly shots Etc.

Common Challenges Making sure your batteries are charged Maintaining a sterile cockpit Being aware of dangerous attitudes The consumable nature of UAS Line of sight
