What makes an observation drawing/painting “good”?

Use your pencil to measure objects relative to other objects in the still life EXAMPLE: The vase is as tall as the cups are wide.

Observational Drawing Tips & Tricks Draw what you SEE, not what you think you KNOW. Look more at your subject than your paper. Draw LIGHTLY when you are mapping out your composition. Check your forms for symmetry by turning your paper upside down.

Don’t forget… Lines of Symmetry Level Lines Ellipses

Drawing the Ellipse

Step 1: Choose your subject Step 1: Choose your subject. Please pick 2 objects from the still life closet. Only choose simple forms like bottles, cups or pitchers. Arrange all of your objects as a group in the center of the table.

Step 2: Practice. Start by drawing the object closest to you. 1 Step 2: Practice! Start by drawing the object closest to you. 1. Ellipse 2. Line of Symmetry 3. Continue with ellipses all the way down the form 4. Connect ellipses with contour line 5. Continue drawing objects that are behind the first object you drew
