Properties of Solutions Some aqueous solutions contain solutes that produce ions in solutions. Ions in the solutions are called electrolytes. Form solutions that can conduct electricity. Most solutions of molecular compounds do not conduct electricity, and are called nonelectrolytes.

Factors affecting solubility 1.- Temperature It is a factor that influences the rate at which solutes dissolve. The solutes dissolve faster because the kinetic energy of the solvent is higher. This increase in kinetic energy leads to an increased frequency and force of collisions between solvent and solute.

Factors affecting solubility The solubility of most solids substances increases as the temperature of the solvent increases . For a few substances, however, the opposite occurs. Gases: The solubility of the gases with water increases with colder temperatures.

Factors affecting solubility Gases have a lower solubility at higher temperatures. At higher temperatures, the gaseous molecules have more kinetic energy and escape the liquid more easily.

Factors affecting solubility 2.- Surface Area A fine powder dissolves more rapidly than larger crystals. Finer particles expose a greater surface area to the colliding water molecules. The more surface area, the faster is the rate of dissolving. Sugar cubes and granulated sugar

Factors affecting solubility 3.- Pressure (with gases) Gas solubility increases as the partial pressure of the gas of the solution increases. Example: carbonated-beverage.
