Do Now #18 1-11 Which of your three argument essays are you going to work on revising and editing? Why did you chose that one? What specific changes, at this point, do you think need to be made? Write a paragraph LT- I can analyze my past pieces of argument writing SC- I can analyze my previous arguments and select one to make improvements and positive changes to and submit as a final essay.

On the text you selected for revision: In 1 color highlighter…. Highlight all of your signal phrases for evidence…. Signal phrases only! LT- I can analyze my past pieces of argument writing SC- I can analyze my previous arguments and select one to make improvements and positive changes to and submit as a final essay.

Lets look at some good and not so good examples…. Tag lines to avoid…. My first piece of evidence is….. My authorizing evidence is… My illustrating evidence is.. My next piece of evidence is… First I want to talk about… Etc… Instead say…. According to John Smith, author of “Text title” John Smith, author of “Text Title” states, The Article titled “Text Title” claims, John Smith states, “Evidence” in his article titled “Article Title.” Etc.

On the text you selected for revision Assignment- Go through your selected text and change all of your signal phrases to be more academic sounding! Add to each piece of evidence if any were missing. LT- I can analyze my past pieces of argument writing SC- I can analyze my previous arguments and select one to make improvements and positive changes to and submit as a final essay.

Commentary-another color Make a key on your essay Signal Phrases – 1 color Evidence-1 color Commentary-another color Highlight the entire essay (except maybe the claim – underline the claim!) LT- I can analyze my past pieces of argument writing SC- I can analyze my previous arguments and select one to make improvements and positive changes to and submit as a final essay.

Let’s focus on evidence: For all of your pieces of evidence (which should be highlighted) 1. Does the evidence have “quotation marks on both sides” 2. Label them: Ethos (when you used an expert) Countering (when you mentioned the opposite view and refuted it) Logos (when you used facts or statistics) Illustrating (everything else!) 3. Number them from “strongest to weakest” strongest being 1 and weakest being 5 (there should be a minimum of five)!! Do you need to look back into your text sets to explore if there are better options than your weakest? Do you need to find an expert or some logos to include? LT- I can analyze my past pieces of argument writing SC- I can analyze my previous arguments and select one to make improvements and positive changes to and submit as a final essay.

Let’s focus on commentary: For all of your pieces of evidence (which should be highlighted): Write the number of sentences of commentary you have (there should be at least 2) Write the commentary strategy you used (sarcasm, humor, rhetorical questions, insight or analysis, rant or rave, etc). Look to avoid just repeating what the author says. Look to avoid having the same types of commentary each time. Make changes to your commentary! Where there isn’t enough… add more! LT- I can analyze my past pieces of argument writing SC- I can analyze my previous arguments and select one to make improvements and positive changes to and submit as a final essay.
