Warm Up 4-3-19 List an interesting fact about each of the following metals: Zinc, Mercury, Lead, and Copper Lead Poisoning Mercury Poisoning

Let’s summarize what we’ve done so far. Activity What did we do? What did we learn? How does it relate to the final product? Launch Mod 1: Intro. to Environmental Health Mod 2: Toxins in the Environment Mod 3: Bioaccumulation & Biomagnification Researched Queen City Farms Toxic Site My neighborhood site Chemicals were dumped. There are lots of micro spills close to home. Now that we know there are toxins in our water and soil, what do we do? Videos on PCB, VOC & Heavy Metals Pre-Test How toxins enter our environment from materials we are around and use daily. We need to know how these toxins enter the environment. We can use fast plants to investigate heavy metal toxins. Video on Fast Plants Video on electronics in environment w/ handout Fast plants take up heavy metals. Electronics are filling up landfills-leaking toxins. Toxins are harmful and not easily dealt with by living things, not easy to get rid of them. We may be able to use these metals in our investigation. Living things can’t Read case studies on lead, mercury, copper, zinc.

Success Criteria: What will I be able to do? I can investigate different ways to remediate (clean up) toxic waste spilled/dumped in our environment.

Water Testing Day! Work with your team. Each person should complete a test. Label each tube for the test you are running. You will run 5 tests on each of 2 samples. Make sure to read the testing instructions carefully. Record your data on the class data table. Run your own water samples last. Rinse out test tubes and cylinder well before putting away!

Graph your results Mercury 0 - 1000 Copper 0 -4 Metals <10 -1000 Think about what type of graph this should be: Circle, Bar or Line? Circle = Parts of a whole Line = One variable is causing an effect on another variable. Bar = Comparison between similar items. You will be making 4 different graphs (one for each test—no pH). Water Testing Discussion 4/3/19 Make new chart of all of the samples you tested and answer these questions for each: Would this be safe to drink? Why or why not? Use your metals chart or ask your student expert in that metal for the health consequence, or look up the consequences of poisoning if they don't know / it's a new substance. Sample Safe to Drink?
