BES: Carbon & Nitrogen Cycle May 14, 2019 Please open your journal to warm ups. Hold on to your Osmosis Death Scenario WS, I’ll collect them on Thursday. Journals are on cart or side table.

Check out your plants… Measure all your seedlings and calculate the average for DAY 8. Record in your data table. Record the control measurements in your data table. Make sure you have water. DO NOT ADD CHEMICALS today. LAST DAY FOR PLANT DATA!

5/14/19 NOTES Carbon & Nitrogen Cycles What is the carbon cycle? The carbon cycle is a process in which carbon compounds move from one sphere to another. Carbon comes in many forms. The capital letter “C” is the atomic symbol for carbon. Examples of molecules that contain carbon: CO2 = carbon dioxide (gas) You breathe this out. C6H12O6 = glucose (solid) This is what plants make. CaCO2 = calcium carbonate (solid) Seashells

5/14/19 NOTES Carbon & Nitrogen Cycles What is the nitrogen cycle? The nitrogen cycle is the biogeochemical cycle by which nitrogen is converted into multiple chemical forms as it circulates among atmosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere. Nitrogen comes in many forms. The capital letter “N” is the atomic symbol for carbon. Examples of molecules that contain nitrogen: KNO3 = potassium nitrate (solid) Found in fertilizer NaNO3 = sodium nitrate (solid) Found in fertilizer N2 = nitrogen (gas) Makes up 78% of air you breathe.

Notice lots of locations where nitrogen is being moved from one sphere to another.

Team Carbon & Team Nitrogen Teams 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 will be Team Carbon (#1 join with another team) Teams 2, 4, 6, 8 will be Team Nitrogen Each team will research their cycle and create a large-scale diagram. You will answer all the questions about your cycle and how it connects to photosynthesis, respiration, and/or phytoremediation. Make sure to read the guidelines for the poster on the WS. There are website resources for you on the worksheet. You will TEACH another team about your cycle next class! Only answer the questions and draw a sketch for your cycle.
