Community Health Needs Assessment CHNA Background Nonprofit hospitals are required to provide benefit to the community that they serve to maintain tax-exempt status, under 501(c)(3) of Federal Internal Revenue Code Section 9007 of ACA requires hospitals to conduct a CHNA every 3 years to assess community need and annually file information [via a Schedule H (Form 990)] regarding progress to meet those needs.
