Welcome to Rowing P.E.I.

What’s great about rowing? Canada Summer Games – Kenora Ontario Highlights Let’s watch a short video of highlights from the 2017 Canada Summer Games High School Rowing in Canada - stop at 1:35 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQHzGqPM5dc

Rowing: a late entry sport Most rowers in Canada start in their teens

Rowing: a late entry sport The age to compete at the 2021 Canada Games in Ontario is 21 and under

Overview of rowing's kinesiology 60 - 70 % legs! Low impact Low risk of concussion Great second sport for athletes who want to build their and Heart = cardio Arm = strength Requires good core strength to balance in the boats

Rowing 2017 Canada Games Team of 6 competing in men’s and women’s single sculls and double sculls They came from: Soccer Sailing Powerlifting Triathlon

In previous games, they came from: Speed skating Gymnastics Curling Athletics

Safety on the water Basic swimming ability is a good thing! Our rowers wear inflatable PFDs Full PFD for rowers under 16

What is coastal rowing? It gets pretty windy here on the Charlottetown Harbour (P.E.I. in general!) And we learned that there was a new kind of boat being built in Europe, made for coastal conditions. Our coastal sculls are wider and more stable, allowing us to row in more varied conditions, including the wind and waves of the Charlottetown Harbour. Coastal rowing is growing in popularity around the world and Canada (Victoria BC) hosted the World Rowing Coastal Championships in October 2018.

Red Island Regatta Saturday, August 24, 2019 This year will be our third time hosting the Red Island Regatta at Brudenell on Saturday August 24th. It’s unique in that competitors compete in sprint races in the morning on a 1,000 metre course - in racing sculls. Then in the afternoon, they race in coastal boats, around buoys, on a course that’s around 2.8 kilometres. So two kinds of rowing in one day. We think we are the only place in Canada to offer this kind of a regatta.

Training Training available year round! Red Island Indoor Rowing Challenge in February There are lots of opportunities to train on indoor rowing machines. Ride and Row offers rowing classes. There are also indoor rowing machines at many gyms. In February, we partner with Ride and Row to host the Red Island Indoor Rowing Challenge, which features individual events and a relay.

Shannon MacAulay from Mount Herbert, P. E. I Shannon MacAulay from Mount Herbert, P.E.I. is training to make the Canadian team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She played hockey at a U.S.college and internationally for Team Canada. Here is Shannon talking about rowing:

Benefits of rowing Low impact full body workout - good for all ages or recovering from injuries Cardiovascular training Good cross training for other sports Builds core strength Relieves stress/meditative Low risk of concussion Rowing is the perfect activity to keep in shape, lose weight, cross-train for another sport, compete, or recover from an injury or surgery. Because it is a low-impact activity, you can row at any age despite specific physical challenges. We consider it a lifelong sport. It’s also good for athletes who have suffered concussions and have had to leave other sports. Open water rowing is an ALL-BODY SPORT, toning your arms, legs, chest, back, and abs. Rowing is also recognized as a COMPLETE CARDIOVASCULAR WORKOUT which is highly aerobic and burns calories quickly. What most people don't realize is that rowing IMPROVES JOINT HEALTH through a wide range of motion. In addition, open water rowing RELIEVES STRESS and allows you the opportunity to remove yourself from the world around you, to connect to the calm and quiet of the water, and to meditate through the rhythmic, repetitive motion of your stroke. Low Impact + High Results Both competitive and recreational rowing are unique in comparison to most sports because they exercise all of your major muscle groups. Everything from your legs, back, and arms are engaged while rowing. In addition, rowing is a low-impact sport. When executed properly, the rowing stroke is a fairly safe motion, providing little room for the serious injury often found in contact and high-impact sports. 1 Lose Weight According to Fritz Hagerman, Ph.D., a professor in the Biological Science Department at Ohio University, “Competitive rowers expended almost twice the number of calories on a 2,000-meter course as a runner in a 3,000-meter steeplechase.”1 However, since rowing is low impact, you will not experience the same wear and tear on your body that you would if you were a runner. Plus, you build strength in your upper body and core. Help Your Heart Cardiovascular training involves any activity that requires the use of the large muscle groups of the body in a regular and uninterrupted manner. Rowing is one of the few non-weight bearing sports that exercises all the major muscle groups. In addition, the consistent and all encompassing activity associated with rowing, combined with being outdoors on the water, has an unparalleled impact on reducing stress.2 Stabilize Your Body Rowing in a boat requires your stabilizer and neutralizer muscles to fire up. Those same muscles might help you avoid a fall or help keep you from hurting your back when lifting a child or a heavy box awkwardly. Your body core, or trunk, becomes stronger and better prepared.3
