What examples of the justice system are we seeing in these chapters? Do you think the justice system is fair? Do you think Okonkwos punishment is fair? Why does he receive this punishment? What does it mean, if one finger brought oil it soiled the others (125)? What is ironic about his punishment? How does Obierka (Okonkwos best friend) justify burning his Okonkwos compound?

Is Okonkwos punishment fair?

What is the purpose of the tortoise's folktale? What is the moral lesson reflected? Is this a reflection of any of the characters?

A folktale is a type of traditional story that tries to explain or understand the world. Such stories were orally passed down through the generations and feature morals or lessons. The stories usually take place long ago in a faraway place and are woven around talking animals, royalty, peasants, or mythical creatures. In a folktale, goodness is always rewarded. Heroes and heroines live happily ever after while villains are suitably punished.

Write your own folktale using those in Things Fall Apart as an example. Remember, your folktale should tell teach a lesson. Often they use animals as the characters. There are some other examples, if you would like to look at them. Your folktale should be about a page in length (preferably typed). Your folktale will be due on Monday, 2/25. We will share them then.

-He has a fatal flaw which leads to his downfall.

He usually goes on a journey or a quest.

-He has a large capacity for suffering.

-His downfall is often preceded by self- realization.
