Discovering the Leader Within DEEP CHANGE Discovering the Leader Within

Deep Change vs. Incremental Change Characteristics of incremental change Result of a rational analysis and planning process. Desired goal with a specific set of steps to reach it. Limited in scope and often reversible. Does not disrupt past patterns –an extension of the past. During incremental change we feel we are in control.

Deep Change vs. Incremental Change Characteristics of Deep Change Requires new ways of thinking and behaving. Change that is major in scope. Discontinuous with the past and generally irreversible. Distorts existing patterns of action. Involves taking risks. Means surrendering control.

LEADERSHIP/CHANGE Leads to the discovery that helps us create the future. Master change agents are capable of making deep change in themselves, in their relationships and in their organization.

COMPONENTS FOR CHANGE Four directives Listen carefully. Try reaching back. Reexamine your motives. Write your worries in the sand. “Man changes the world by changing himself.”

Power of One Deep change comes at great cost. Enacting change means taking some risks. Risks brings self-empowerment. Align internal self with external world. Confidence grows ─ progress toward goal. Energized and recognition one person can make a difference.

Power of Many Start at top. Develop a clear vision, plans and assignments. Move decisions to the appropriate levels. Provide necessary information and resources. Encourage process improvement.

Empowerment Start with the needs of the people. Expose the difficult issues. Model integrity through risk-taking. Build credibility through small wins. Encourage initiative. Build teamwork.

Levers of Empowerment Clear vision and challenge. Openness and teamwork. Feel part of the change process. Will tend to make change happen when included in the process.
