Data Warehousing Fundamentals Data warehousing is a technology that aggregates structured data from one or more sources so that it can be compared and analyzed for greater business intelligence. Data warehouses are typically used to correlate broad business data to provide greater executive insight into corporate performance. Data warehouses use a different design from standard operational databases. Data warehouses are designed to give a long-range view of data over time. Data warehouses trade off transaction volume and instead specialize in data aggregation OLAP data with Star Schemas, Snowflake Schemas with Fact & Dimension Tables, Cubes etc.

ETL & ELT process ETL is short for Extract, Transform, Load, three database functions that are combined into one tool to pull data out of one system and place it into another system. Extract is the process of reading data from a database. In this stage, the data is collected, often from multiple and different types of sources. Transform is the process of converting the extracted data from its previous form into the form it needs to be in so that it can be placed into another database. Transformation occurs by using rules or lookup tables or by combining the data with other data. Load is the process of writing the data into the target database. ETL vs E-LT

OLTP OLAP Source of Data Operational data: OLTPs are the original source of the data.
