1 - What are Fingerprints? July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

What are Fingerprints? Fingers, toes, palms and feet have small ridges. Ridges are connected units called dermal or friction ridges. Friction ridges help people to pick up things July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Fingerprints Skin secretes sweat Oils, water and salts When a person touches a smooth surface, a mark is left. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Our fingertips are covered with hundreds of microscopic sweat pores wihich make out fingers moist and able to grip things. Melanocytes contain pigmentation and give the skin color. Sebaceous glands secrete a waxy material that moistens skin and waterproofs skin. The Pancinian corpuscle is a sensory organ that responds to vibration and asists in grasping. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Formation of Fingerprints Friction ridges are established by the 10th week of pregnancy. The ridges occur in the sub-layer of the epidermis and are protected. Fingerprints cannot be destroyed. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Formation of Fingerprints The basal layer of skin in a fetus' finger grows faster than the epidermis and dermis. The underlying structure is like the springs of a bed. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Fingerprint Removal Four different methods of fingerprint removal: burning off with caustic substance biting off the fingertips transplanted skin from feet surgical removal of fingertip skin July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Biting Off The Fingertips Finger tips have been chewed off. When the skin heals, the fingerprint returns. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Burning with Caustic Substance People have tried to remove fingerprints with acid. Fingerprints grow back. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Transplanted Skin from Feet A recent trend is to achieve this surgically, either via skin grafts from the feet or the skin. Others have layers of skin surgically removed from the fingertips Picture of a man who’s toe skin was use to replace is fingertips. Doctor who performed the operation was sentence to prison July 1, 2019 Fingerprints

Skin Grafts Skin grafts can remove fingerprints. This does not remove all prints from the body. As a forensic scientist, look for more than fingerprints. July 1, 2019 Fingerprints
