Seasons. What Causes Seasons? Seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth’s axis as it moves around the sun. Seasons happen because the Earth is tilted.

Presentation transcript:

Bell ringer Part 1: Quick Write (in Composition Notebook) Turn in notebook onto table if you didn’t on Friday. Seasons are very different depending on the part of the earth that you live on. Describe the four seasons of Alabama to someone who has never been here before. (full paragraph) If you just moved here recently, then you can describe the four seasons of the state that you moved from.

Part 2: Complete Show me the Evidence (the first two columns)

Revolution and Rotation The solar system is formed by the sun, Earth, and seven other planets. Earth revolves around the sun at about 67,000 miles per hour. It makes one revolution per year. At the same time, Earth rotates on its axis, an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole.

Revolution and Rotation (cont.) Earth tilts at an angle of about 23.5 degrees. This tilt causes the Northern Hemisphere to receive more direct sunlight for half the year (warmer temperatures). The Southern Hemisphere receives less direct sunlight during half the year (colder temperatures). This process creates the 4 seasons in both hemispheres
