You need at least 5 objects’ data (mass and volume) You need at least 5 objects’ data (mass and volume). If you don’t have it you can borrow the data from another group P.S. Prefix Quiz #2 today!

Physical Properties A physical property is something that you can observe. It is a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change. Mass and volume are physical properties

Physical Properties Mass and volume are physical properties

Physical Properties Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance Example: Sugar dissolved in water, Kool-Aid dissolved in water.

Write this down in your notes. Add this after solubility Write this down in your notes. Add this after solubility. Then get out your mass and volume lab Chose some students to describe what they said. They should all be physical properties.

Physical Properties Density is the amount of matter in a given space, or in a certain volume. A golf ball and tennis ball have similar volumes. A golf ball has a higher mass, therefore has a higher density. Do some density problems on the board. Have the students figure out the density of all objects from previous lab for homework

What is the density of an object whose mass is 25g and whose volume is 10 cm3 ? 2.5

What is the density of an object whose mass is 6g and whose volume is 8 cm3 ? .75

Find the Density of all 5 objects from our previous lab Find the Density of all 5 objects from our previous lab. Don’t forget the units!! Object Volume Mass Density

I have never seen a burnt piece of wood before. Describe it to me!

A Physical Change is a change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance.

Chemical Properties Chemical Properties: indicates how a substance reacts with another substance Wood is burned: ash, smoke are created. New substances have different properties than the original piece of wood.

3 Examples of Chemical Properties 1. Flammability: the ability of something to burn which produces light and heat. Take a piece of paper, light the end on fire.

3 Examples of Chemical Properties 2. Reacting with Acids: some metals react with various acids. All metals do not react with all acids. Zinc and HCL

3 Examples of Chemical Properties 3. Reactivity: the ability of two or more substance to combine and form one of more new substances. Reacting with Oxygen, occurs over time. Example: iron rusting, apple turning brown   Bite an apple

Chemical Change This happens when one or more substances are changed into new substances that have new and different properties. Chemical changes can’t be reversed. Turning on a light, using a battery, combining ingredients to bake a cake. Can I replace the end of the burnt piece of paper? No, it’s a chemical change. If I wad it up, can I reverse it? Yes, it’s a physical change.

Clues to a Chemical Change When these things happen, a chemical reaction has occurred. Clues to a Chemical Change Color Change Temperature Change Formation of a Precipitate Formation of a gas Color change – food color and water plus bleach Temperature change/ formation of a gas – HCl and Zinc Precipitate – redbull and milk
