Capítulo 1 Subject Pronouns

Here are the subject pronouns in Spanish: yo I nosotros we (masc, fem & m) nosotras we (fem) tú you (informal) vosotros you all (masc/informal) vosotras you all (fem/ informal) *Only used in Spain usted you Ud. (formal) ustedes you all (formal) Uds. *used for all you all except in Spain él he ella she ellos they (masc) ellas they (fem)

The subject of a sentence tells who is doing the action: You also use subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, we, they, it) to tell who is doing the action. You often use people’s names as the subject. Gregorio escucha música. Gregory listens to music. Ana canta y baila. Ana sings and dances. The subject pronoun replaces people’s names. Él escucha música. He listens to music. Ella canta y baila. She sings and dances.

Rules Tú, usted, ustedes, and vosotros(as) all mean “you” When speaking to one person Use tú with family, friends, and people your age or younger, and anyone you call by his or her first name. Use usted with adults you address with a title, such as señor, señora, profesor(a), etc. Usted is almost ALWAYS abbreviated Ud.

When speaking to 2 or more people In Latin America, use ustedes regardless of age. Ustedes is usually written as Uds. In Spain (and only Spain), use vosotros(as) when speaking to 2 or more people that you would normally use tú with Tú + Tú = vosotros(as) Use Uds. when talking to 2 or more people you would normally use Ud. with.

If a group is made up of all males or of both males and females, use the masc. forms of the pronouns: nosotros, vosotros, ellos. If a group is all females, use the fem. forms of the pronouns: nosotras, vosotras, ellas.

Also, you can combine a subject pronoun and a name to form a subject. Alejandro y yo = nosotros Carlos y ella = ellos Pepe y tú = Uds. Lola y ella = ellas Summarize:
