Young/Foreign Workers? (Under 25 or new to a job)

Why riskier for young workers? Kelly Kaler, 19, Vancouver, British Columbia† Kelly was murdered while working alone at night in a store, in 1997. An intruder broke in, robbed the store and murdered her. There was a button to press in case of emergency, but the killer prevented her from reaching it. Kelly had been on the job for only four months. Following her murder, additional emergency buttons were installed.

Programs we offer at YWCHSB

K-2 students meet Susie the Safety Squirrel, try on safety gear and play safety charades

In grades 1-7, students do Safety Builds to learn basic hazard id and mitigation strategies

Head First is the concussion prevention workshop for grades 4-6

Safety Online is for grade 6-8 students to learn about the risks of being online and ways to keep safe online

Grade 8 students learn about mental health stigmas and tools to maintain wellness

Work Shouldn’t Hurt is for Young workers to learn about new job hazards, workplace safety rights and responsibilities, and WCB

Risky Business helps summer camp counsellors develop risk analysis skills and safety plans
