Islam in Contemporary America In 2016, there were 3.3 million Muslims living in the US about 1% of the total U.S. population. 3.3 million Muslims ≈1% of the total U.S. population

9 in 10 US Muslims - American Pride 89% of Muslims say they are both proud to be American and proud to be Muslim. Fully eight-in-ten say they are satisfied with the way things are going in their lives. A large majority of U.S. Muslims continue to profess faith in the American dream, with 70% saying that most people who want to get ahead can make it in America if they are willing to work hard. US Muslims’ Concerns Nearly two-thirds of Muslim Americans say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. today. About three-quarters say Donald Trump is unfriendly toward Muslims in America. Half of Muslim Americans say it has become harder to be Muslim in the U.S. in recent years. 48% say they have experienced at least one incident of discrimination in the past 12 months. 49% of Muslim Americans say someone has expressed support for them because of their religion in the past year. 55% think Americans in general are friendly toward U.S. Muslims, compared with just 14% who say they are unfriendly. This is similar to the percentage of the U.S. general public that shares these concerns (83%), Although Muslims are more likely than U.S. adults overall to say they are very concerned about extremism in the name of Islam around the world (66% vs. 49%). US Muslims and Society Most Muslims (60%) also perceive media coverage of Muslims and Islam as unfair. A similar share (62%) think the American people as a whole do not see Islam as part of mainstream American society. These views are largely echoed by U.S. adults overall, many of whom agree that media coverage of Muslims is unfair and say they personally do not see Islam as part of mainstream society. But tension is not the only thing that defines the relationship between Muslims and the rest of the U.S. population. Six-in-ten U.S. Muslims say they have a lot in common with most Americans. Muslims are much more likely to say the American people, in general, are friendly toward Muslims in the country (55%) than to view Americans as a whole as unfriendly (14%). US Muslim Discrimination About a third of Muslims, for example, say they have been treated with suspicion over the past 12 months because of their religion. Nearly one-in-five say they have been called offensive names or singled out by airport security, One-in-ten say they have been singled out by other law enforcement officials. 6% say they have even been physically threatened or attacked. In total, nearly half of Muslims (48%) say they have experienced at least one of these types of discrimination over the past year. This is up slightly from 2011 (43%) and 2007 (40%). Nearly one-in-five U.S. Muslims (18%) say they have seen anti-Muslim graffiti in their local community in the last 12 months. Pew Research Center - 2017

Bridge Initiative / Georgetown University - 2016 US Catholic Media From October 2014 to September 2015, nearly 800 articles referencing Islam or Muslims appeared on major American Catholic websites. In prominent Catholic outlets, half of the time the word “Islamic” is used, it is in reference to the Islamic State terrorist group. The headlines of Catholic articles dealing with Islam have a negative sentiment overall, and the primary emotion conveyed is anger. Of the online Catholic outlets examined, Catholic Answers and Catholic Culture had the most negative sentiment in their titles related to Islam. Only one outlet had positive headlines about Islam: American Catholic. Those surveyed who consume content from Catholic media outlets have more unfavorable views of Muslims than those who don’t. Bridge Initiative / Georgetown University - 2016 US Catholic Attitudes Nearly half of Catholics can’t name any similarities between Catholicism and Islam, or say explicitly that there are no commonalities. A majority of Catholics correctly identify prayer and fasting as important parts of Muslim life, but also incorrectly believe that Muslims worship the Prophet Muhammad. When asked about their overall impression of Muslims, three in ten Catholics admit to having unfavorable views. Only 14% of Catholics say they have favorable views. 45% have “neither favorable nor unfavorable”views. 11% are unsure. Catholics are less likely than the general American public to know a Muslim personally. Catholics who know a Muslim personally, or who have participated in dialogue or community service with Muslims, often have very different views about Islam and interfaith dialogue than those who haven’t interacted with Muslims.
