Unit 5/ #2 RLS: Ted Ed video What is love? - Brad Troeger WOK: Emotion AOKS: Natural Sciences, Human Sciences KQ: Is there such thing as a “universal” definition of love that is consistent across generations, cultures, and personal beliefs?

Warm Up Questions How can we measure love? Use the AOK on your desk to answer the question

AOK: Math

AOK: Natural Sciences Can biological evolution offer any insights into a cultural phenomenon like Valentine's Day?

Hypothalamus It controls metabolic processes of the Autonomic Nervous System. It synthesizes and secretes neurohormones, These hypothalamic releasing hormones control and regulate the secretion of pituitary hormones

Rutgers Love Study

Category 1: Lust The evolutionary basis for this stems from our need to reproduce, a need shared among all living things. The hypothalamus of the brain plays a big role in this, stimulating the production of the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen from the testes and ovaries

Category #2: Attraction Attraction involves the brain reward pathways which partly explains why the first few weeks or months of a relationship can be so exhilarating Dopamine(hypothalamus). it’s released when spending time with loved ones. High levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, are released during attraction. These chemicals make us giddy, energetic, and euphoric, even leading to decreased appetite and insomnia

Category #3: Attachment Attachment is the predominant factor in long- term relationships. The two hormones oxytocin and vasopressin Oxytocin is often nicknamed “cuddle hormone” oxytocin is produced by the hypothalamus and released in large quantities during mating breastfeeding, and childbirth.

Class Discussion If much of love can be explained by chemistry. Is there really a “formula” for love, what is it, and what does it mean?

Love Hurts The same brain regions light up when we become addicted to material goods as when we become emotionally dependent on our partners. Addicts going into withdrawal are not unlike love-struck people craving the company of someone they cannot see.

Stanford Love Competition

Video Debrief If all scientific experiments have 'uncertainty' how can we know 'truth' in science? Is it true to say that the human sciences are less certain than the natural sciences?

EQ: Warm-Up Scenarios You made plans to be with your significant other. Two hours before, they call you and tell you that their friends invited them to hang out tonight. They really want to go and ask you if it's okay. How do you respond? What do you really mean? After trying on many outfits, you find one you want, but need a second opinion. You ask a friend and they say, "You look fine!" What do you think they actually mean by that? Bill asks Alice what her favorite flower is, since he knows Valentine's Day is coming up. She responds, "I like all flowers!" What does Alice mean?

AOK: Human Science

Class Discussion meaning of picture??? What is / what could be Emotional Intelligence“? Could it be described / measured? How? Take the EQ test on class website Do you know a person you would describe as particularly skilled in EQ?

Thought Experiment #1 Peter has decided that he wants to marry Heloise. He came to his decision by weighing up all of Heloise’s good points and bad points and comparing them with those of all other life-partners. Heloise came out as the most rational choice. What can be said for and against this way of deciding whom you would like to marry? How would you feel if you were Heloise?

Thought Experiment #3 You come to a foreign country in which all the political and economic power is held by women. Men have no right to vote, they are not allowed to drive cars, and they have to stay at home all day to do the housework. Eventually, one of them gets killed as he attempts to change the situation. Being asked, they tell you they feel perfectly happy in their situation. How would your react in this situation? Would you intervene? Why (not)? Discuss, write down the Pros and Cons!

Empathy Can too much empathy be a bad thing? What are the claims/ counter-claims that were made in the video by Bloom?

Class Discussion How far should we rely on our emotions and feelings as a source of knowledge?
