Foundational Studies CARS – Summer 2018

All applicants seeking admission to Oglala Lakota College must send each of the items listed below BEFORE being admitted: Complete Admission Application and declare a major. Students may only declare one major at a time while attending OLC. Furnish a copy of your high school transcript, or official General Education Development (GED) transcripts MANDATORY. Students with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher will be required to submit documentation verifying the degree awarded. A student with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher will be required to submit documentation verifying the degree awarded. Transfer students must send official college transcripts from all college/universities previously attended. Verification of Tribal Enrollment if the student is a tribal member of a Federally Recognized Tribe. Complete College Readiness Assessment (see policy 70-300). Policy 80-000 ADMISSIONS

College Readiness Assessment Policy 70-300 Oglala Lakota College requires all new students to take the “OLC Placement” assessment (Reading Comprehension & Sentence Skills and Mathematics) to determine placement. The institution accepts the 10.1 equivalency in reading comprehension. The OLC Placement range for reading 10.1 includes the “Reading Comprehension” cut score of 241.

College Readiness Assessment Accuplacer The college readiness assessment is a series of three test and possibly a fourth depending on the arithmetic score. Reading comprehension (20 questions) Sentence skills (20 questions) Arithmetic (20 questions) Elementary algebra (20 questions)

Reading Comprehension Next-Generation Reading assesses the test-taker’s ability to derive meaning from a range of texts and to determine the meaning of words and phrases in short and extended contexts. Passages on the test cover a range of content areas, writing modes, and complexities. Both single and paired passages are included. Four broad knowledge and skills categories are assessed: Information and Ideas Rhetoric Synthesis Vocabulary

Sentence Skills Next-Generation Writing evaluates a test-taker’s ability to revise and edit multiparagraph text. Questions cover two broad knowledge and skills categories, each containing three subcategories: Expression of Ideas Development Organization Effective Language Use Standard English Conventions Sentence Structure Usage Punctuation

Arithmetic Next-Generation Arithmetic focuses on computation, order of operations, estimation and rounding, comparing and ordering values in different formats, and recognizing equivalent values across formats. The following knowledge and skills categories are assessed: Whole Number Operations Fraction Operations Decimal Operations Percent Number Comparisons and Equivalents

Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) Next-Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) assesses the following knowledge and skills: Rational numbers Ratio and Proportional Relationships Exponents Algebraic Expressions Linear Equations Linear Applications and Graphs Probability Sets Descriptive Statistics Geometry Concepts

After competing the ACCUPLACER: A report is generated that lets a students know about where they place in each of those tests. The student’s placement is determined at the completion of the College Readiness Assessment.

RW 083 A and B Students that test in the RW083 A and B levels are eligible to participate in the summer program. When they advance to the RW093 level they are considered point of entry students and may take additional classes and are PELL eligible in the fall and spring semesters. Students that do not advance to the next level in the sequence are Non- PELL eligible. They may participate in the CAR(f) program in the fall/spring semester.

RW093 Students who test into this level are eligible to participate in the summer program When they advance to the 103 levels they are considered general education students and are PELL eligible. These students are not restricted to certain classes or number of hours that can be taken a semester.

College Academy of Readiness Summer Program (CARS ) The CARS program is an academic program offered during the summer session at the Oglala Lakota College. These are preparatory courses and they are non transferable and non PELL eligible. The summer program is designed to give students at both the 083 and 093 levels the opportunity to move forward into the next level of their education. Students must participate in the program for the full duration of the program and move forward one level from where they begin to be eligible for scholarship support.

All applicants must complete the CARS application All applicants must complete the admissions process and be admitted as a student at the Oglala Lakota College (Admissions Policy #80-000) All applicants must complete the CARS application The CARS program participants may be supported by a scholarship. Students that elect to participate in the CARS program cannot receive PELL as these courses are preparatory only. CARS students are not considered full time students and the courses are non-transferable. Furthermore, students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the, one-time $100 per course completed scholarship at the end of the summer program. Students must complete the course(s) they elect to take Students must adhere to the OLC attendance Policy. Three consecutive absences or five scattered absences will result in the students being ineligible for the scholarship Students entering at the 083 levels must advance to the 093 levels however testing into the 083 level I understand I will not be able to be officially enrolled until I pass into the RW093 level. Students entering at the 093 levels must advance to the 103 levels

Who can participate? The program is designed for the following students New students High school graduates Current graduating seniors Any high school graduate that has not gone to college GED students that have completed their program and received their certification Currently enrolled students RW093 level students who may have attempted the RW093 but did not pass to the next level

When is the program available? May 28th through June 17th Cheyenne River June 3rd h through June 21st in Kyle, Rapid City, and Pine Ridge Foundational Studies courses offered RW083/093 Basic English I and II Math 083/093 Basic Math I and II

What do I do after I finish the admissions application? The CARS program has an application for potential participants. The application is available at all district centers. The application can also be obtained by calling the Foundational Studies Office at 605-455-6109 or visiting the Foundational Studies website at www.olc.edu All applications should be returned to the Foundational Studies Department.
