Environmental Issues: India China hina

Human Geography …studies the relationship between the physical environment and the activities of humans.

The major weather events of India are monsoons.

Monsoons: heavy winds that bring very heavy rainfall and often results in flooding.

Monsoons can be good because they bring water to crops.

But monsoons can be very bad because of the flooding they cause.

The monsoon season in India runs from June through September. Very often, people and animals drown during monsoon season.

Monsoons also affect China. Flooding from monsoons occur in China every two-three years.

Deforestation has made the effects of flooding much worse.

What causes flooding? Very heavy rain. Over time, the soil becomes saturated and cannot soak up anymore water. So it floods.

As cities get bigger, more land is paved, which doesn’t allow rain to soak into the ground.

Deforestation: adds to flooding problems *People cut down trees *People build on hillsides *More water run-off and landslides
