Chemistry – Sept 25, 2017 Do Now – Get out your prelab flowchart and procedure for homework check and collect the first materials you will need for your separation strategy, including safety goggles and a balance. You will receive your sample mixture to separate after I have checked your prelab. Hints: iron is magnetic but none of the others are salt dissolves in water but none of the others do in water, poppies float, but iron and sand sink Don’t add water until you really want to, and use a limited amount, because you’ll just have to boil it away later.

Objectives and Agenda Objectives To separate a mixture of sand, salt, poppies and iron Assignment: Separation Lab Report using the General format (due next Wednesday, Oct 4) – Use the Lab report writing guide and template online

Separation Lab overview Given a mixture of Sand, Salt, Poppy Seeds and Iron Filings, design and execute a separation method. Write a proposed procedure to start. When executing your procedure, record every action you take in the order you do them to create the real procedure that you used. Separate, dry and weight each of the four substances. Determine the percent composition of each of the four substances in the mixture. Determine the percent recovery of matter from the mixture. Assignment: Separation Lab Report using the General format (due next Wednesday, Oct 4) – Use the Lab report writing guide and template online

Exit Slip - Homework Exit Slip: Put equipment back where you found it, except for balances If done, dispose of mixture components in trash (poppy, iron and sand) or rinse down the sink (salt). Or if not done, put materials aside on a watch glass or in beaker on a paper towel labeled with your names What’s Due? (Pending assignments to complete.) Physical and chemical properties and changes worksheet (due Wed) Practice element quiz Wed Revised Lab Report for Pennies is due Wed (Template and guide available online) Separation Lab Report (due Wednesday 10/4) What’s Next? (How to prepare for the next day) Continuation of Separation Lab
