Let’s Take a Moment of Silence... 09-11-18

BELLWORK: Now, Let’s Hear From Sesame Street... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUVhTEa7qD8 What do you think about Children’s Television tackling the big topics? How are you feeling today? Please write about this for Bellwork

PLANNER: Homework Please have two working thesis statements by Thursday-- one that argues one side of your argument, and one that argues the other side

Thesis Statements 09-11-18

So, We’re Here... We are to the end of the introduction! This is where everything is going to tie together-- where you’re argument is going to matter the most This is where you say that you are going to prove your point-- and make that point matter

So, We’re Here... Let’s recap: What have we done so far? Hook Context and Info Beginning of Argument

Here’s What We Have... “A hypocrite is a person that projects their own flaws and undesirable traits onto others in order to deflect these insecurities to feel better about themselves. Main character Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye is prone to calling those around him “phonies,” being people that do not live a personal truth and instead fake their personality for the benefit of the world around them. However, it seems that Holden could be the biggest “phony” of them all. With hypocritical tendencies such as…”

Question Where is this heading next? What do you think I should argue? Let’s try to write something together, once we define this...

Defining: Thesis A thesis is a clear-cut statement that tells your audience what you will be arguing It cannot be vague in any sense of the word-- you must let your audience know where your paper is heading Organization is key in an argument, so a thesis also nicely lays out the organization of your paper as well

Defining: Thesis Is there anything else we know about a thesis? On your rubric, there is a graded section for thesis-- but we will not be handing out rubrics until your rough draft is handed in

So, Now... Let’s go back to what I have written with your ideas

What I’m Writing...

Now... How might I really show where my argument is heading? What do you think I should do?

Some Things to Think About... It is easy to have three “prongs” to a thesis statement-- three main points that you will get to in your body paragraphs It will set up the rest of your paper! For now, this is the best way for us to write this essay

So... Give me some ideas on what you are working on You are going to have two thesis statements due on Thursday-- you might find that you are starting to disagree with your original argument at this point! See where this essay might go
