Ensuring Success through Assessment – Introduction

ENSURING SUCCESS THROUGH ASSESSMENT Preview 1 Welcome to this workshop on assessment. Assessment is a challenging area for teachers of all subject areas. Our World comes with an assessment program developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington D.C, so you can be confident that you have the best tools to assess your young learners as they progress through the program. This workshop features classroom-based or formative assessment. It will show you how to assess your young learners every day in class to ensure their success.

Small group discussion: What do you think of when you hear the word assessment? _____________________________________________________ Preview 2  Distribute Handout 7.1.  Ask participants to discuss the prompt in small groups.  After two minutes, have participants share their ideas. Write their ideas on the screen.  As you collect ideas, lead a discussion that makes the following points:  Assessment refers to more than formal or end of term tests. Assessment is an ongoing process, whose ultimate purpose is to improve student learning.
