SC.8.E.5.9 Moon Phases & Eclipses Explain the impact of objects in space on each other. Sun on Earth, seasons & gravitational attraction. The Moon on Earth, including tides, eclipses and position of each body.

Bell ringer: Write the question What do equinox and solstice have to do with seasons? When do we have the longest day throughout the year? (refer to question 1) If the north pole is facing the sun, what season would be present in the southern hemisphere? Refer to the picture: What season is shown on this diagram?

Moon & Earth The moon is Satellite of Earth Satellite: any object that orbits another Gravity: all bodies in space have exert force on each other The more MASS, the more GRAVITY a larger body Earth’s gravity keeps the moon in place

The moon Only visible from Earth when it reflects the Sun’s light Same side always faces Earth (nearside) The dark side never faces Earth. Full of crater 28.5 days to orbit Earth

Changes in Appearance As the moon revolves around the Earth, the portion of the moon that reflects light back to us changes. The different views that we get are called lunar phases. If the portion of the moon we see is getting larger, we call it waxing. If the portion of the moon we see is getting smaller, we call it waning. The shape of the moon also has names: If it is “egg shaped to round” it is a gibbous. If it looks like it had a piece bitten out of it, it is a crescent. Comprehension Check: Where does the rest of the moon “go” when you see a quarter moon? A half moon?

Eclipses An eclipse is when one object in space casts a shadow on another. Two types of eclipses that you will see: Lunar: the moon moves through the Earth’s shadow (the Earth’s shadow does NOT cause phases). Solar: the moon moves in between the Earth and the Sun blocking the Sun’s light. Two parts of an eclipse: Umbra: the darkest part of the shadow. Penumbra: the spreading cone of lighter shadow. Compare/Contrast: Lunar and Solar Eclipse
