Effective learning habits that blend with your learning style What type of learner are you? Effective learning habits that blend with your learning style

LEARNING STYLES VERBAL SOCIAL VISUAL AURAL SOLITARY KINESTHETIC How do you learn best?

VISUAL LEARNERS If you are a visual learner, you often learn best when teachers use pictures, power points, charts, sketches, and other images to teach their lessons. You learn best when using your sense of sight.

VISUAL LEARNERS Effective learning habits for visual learners: Use highlighters to focus on important information. Make graphic organizers and flashcards to hold information in your memory. Study the pictures and diagrams in your text that relate to the lesson. Ask your teacher to draw symbols or pictures on the board that will help you remember the material.

VISUAL LEARNERS Go to websites such as YouTube and the Khan Academy http://www.khanacademy.org http://www.youtube.com When you are at school, BE SURE TO GET YOUR TEACHER’S PERMISSION BEFORE VISITING ANY WEBSITE so that you are not in violation of your school’s technology policy!

ARE YOU AN AURAL LEARNER? Do you remember information best when you are listening to music or listening to your teacher speak about a topic? Do you understand the material better when you discuss the information with others? If so, you may have an aural learning style.

EFFECTIVE LEARNING HABITS FOR AURAL LEARNERS “Ask meaningful questions during the lesson.” “Watch videos” on topics you are studying; ask your teacher to list web addresses on the board that you can visit to listen to the material. “Recite information aloud” when you are studying at home.

It’s ok to be a kinesthetic learner. Kinesthetic learners are hands-on learners. Kinesthetic learners like to use their sense of touch; they prefer to learn by doing (i.e. project learning, building a model). Kinesthetic learners also prefer to actively participate while learning.

GREAT LEARNING HABITS FOR KINESTHETIC LEARNERS Do something physical while you study: When at home, try walking around the room, squeezing a soft ball, tossing a ball to someone else. Review your notes by talking aloud with a study partner or family member. Highlight important information in your notes.

GREAT LEARNING HABITS FOR KINESTHETIC LEARNERS… Use index cards to make a matching game. Write terms on one card and definitions on another. Quiz yourself by matching terms with definitions. Ask your teacher if you can create a project instead of writing a report.

VERBAL LEARNERS ARE THE TALKERS Verbal learners prefer to use speech or language while learning. Verbal learners enjoy discussing a topic, giving a speech in front of the class, acting out a scene from a book… Verbal learners may also enjoy reading about something and then talking about the topic with others.

TIPS FOR VERBAL LEARNERS Mnemonics are strategies for remembering information. Acronym mnemonics is a strategy that uses the first letter of every word as a memory technique. CCPS – Chesterfield County Public Schools NBA – National Basketball Association NFL – National Football League Try creating acronyms to help you remember new information.

TIPS FOR VERBAL LEARNERS Create “rhymes and rhythms” to remember information. Act out, or role play to enhance your memory of new material. Talk aloud about the advantages and disadvantages of something you have read.

SOCIAL VS. SOLITARY LEARNERS What do you think is the difference between these two learning styles? What tips do you have for each type of learner?

SOLIARY SOCIAL LEARNING STYLES SOLITARY LEARNERS Like quiet learning settings Like to work alone Prefer writing options SOCIAL LEARNERS Like to work with others Prefer verbal assignment options Prefer group assignments

SOLIARY SOCIAL LEARNING HABITS SOLITARY LEARNERS Take detailed notes. Ask if there is a rubric for the assignment SOCIAL LEARNERS Ask about creating a blog Dramatize something you are studying with others. Ask about games that relate to concepts you are studying

WHAT TYPE OF LEARNER ARE YOU? How can you use this information to help you communicate with your teachers? What did you learn that might help you while you are studying?
