You need everything for periods 1-4. Please make sure you have your: Agenda Pencil Homework Necessary materials for your first 4 classes. No cell phone or gum!

Statistics Pre-Test You will have 15 minutes to complete

Do now: Take out H.W. and leave on desk. Pick up a new packet, put your name on top. Read the four steps above example 2. What are some things that you notice? What are some things that you wonder?

Objective: I will be able to: Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers. So I can: learn how to distinguish between statistical and non-statistical questions and distinguish between categorical and numerical data; to eventually create my own real-life statistical question . I will show that I understood it by verbally discussing with my partners to successfully complete at least 10 real world problems using my response cards. 6.SP. A.1

Vocabulary: Statistics Data Category Categorical Number Numerical Statistical non-statistical

Pg. 1 I/We… Not statistical Statistical Statistical not statistical

What is a statistical question? A question that can be answered with data and for which it is anticipated that the data (information) collected to answer the question will vary. “How old am I?” Not statistical “How old are the students in my school?” Statistical

How do you feel? topic.

Determine if the question is statistical or not statistical… Use your board for your response: Determine if the question is statistical or not statistical… You… Be prepared to say why Who is my favorite movie star? Not statistical What are the favorite colors of sixth graders in my school? Statistical How many years have students in my school’s band or orchestra played an instrument? Statistical What is the favorite subject of 6th graders at my school? Statistical How many brothers and sisters does my best friend have? Not statistical You… do #4 on pg. 3

How do you feel? topic.

Pg. 3 some examples of categorical data: eye color, the month in which you were born, your favorite subject. some examples of numerical data: height, number of pets, minutes to get to school

Determine if the data sets are categorical (C) or numerical (N)… You… do #7 on pg. 4

How do you feel? topic.

We are going to do a front/back split of the room for questions 1 and 2. If you feel that the answer is statistical (or numerical for question 2) you will go to the front of the room and if you think the answer is not statistical (or categorical for question 2) you will go to the back of the room. I need to go to page 5: # 1 a-c # 2 a-c #3 a-b #4

How do you feel? topic.

I can use my examples to help! Homework: Pg. 5 (rest) and pg. 6

Exit Ticket Indicate whether the question is a statistical question or not? Explain why. How much do the dogs belonging to students at our school weigh? If you collected data on the weights of dogs, would the data be numerical or categorical? Explain why.

Accommodations Read or reread presentation or activity directions, as needed or after prompting Use examples to model and act as a guide for emerging learners
