Women During 20th Century Women played a significant role during WWI by working in factories and making war materials, while men were fighting in the war.

Women in the 20th century Until the early 1900s, women were not allowed to vote in most countries.

Women in the 1920’s More women in democratic and industrialized nations were entering new professions, such as journalism and medicine.

Women in the 1940’s and 1950’s Women were more active during WWII, serving on the homefront and in medicine and the military In the 1950’s, women took a step back when the troops returned.

Women in China Communism provided women with more equality Encouraged women to work outside of the home Outlawed footbinding

Feminism Grew in the 1960s, especially in the United States Women began to demand equality and make progress in the American workforce.

Lower Pay Discrimination Even after they received the right to vote, they had to deal with lower pay for the same jobs and many were denied education.

Developing vs. Industrialized Nations Developing Nations Women have traditional roles (childcare, field work, etc.) Women depend on men to help them survive Industrialized Nations Women are given more rights Women can work outside of the home Women are economically independent

Women’s Rights and Religion In some Arab and Muslim lands, women are required to wear traditional clothing and can’t work outside the home. They are also often victims of abuse.

What did you learn? How were women discriminated against in society? What is the difference between an industrialized and a developing nation? What are 2 ways in which women began to earn more rights?
